Three thousand persons inside and outside the Community Synagogue last night declared today to be a “Day of Jewish Survival” and called on the Nixon administration to help Israel live by sending her more Phantom jets. With the endorsement of the mayor’s office, 4,500 petitions have already been sent to the White House by Miamians, according to Rabbi Tibor H. Stern. Twenty-five rabbis issued a special plea to Israeli Premier Golda Meir on the eve of her talks with administration leaders, urging her to reaffirm that Jewish identity in Israel will remain under halachic terms.
Sen. Henry M. Jackson (D., Wash.), who was in this city last night, could not attend but sent a message declaring that the “growing tide of anti-Semitism in the Soviet Union” gave Israel “even more importance as a symbol of deliverance.” Israel, said Jackson, is a “major bulwark” against Russian penetration in the Middle East, and thus “immediate delivery” of Phantom jets is required. Scoring President Nixon’s “shocking failure” on this matter, Jackson contended: “This administration continues to follow a policy of carrot and stick, where the Soviets and the Arabs get the carrot while Israel gets the stick. The time to end this foolishness is long since past.”
