Defense Minister Moshe Dayan has authorized the playing of radio and television sets in Army camps and canteens on Saturdays and holidays despite heated opposition from Religious Party leaders. Hitherto the playing of sets in public places has been forbidden on the Sabbath in order not to offend Orthodox sensibilities. But Gen. Dayan declared that troops who bear the brunt of Israel’s defense should not be left without news for 24 hours every week. The proposal, which came from the Army General Staff, was approved by the Cabinet over Orthodox objections.
