Former Foreign Minister Moshe Dayan of Israel, in his recent tour in the United States on behalf of the United Jewish Appeal, told his audiences that he is confident the Reagan Administration would support Israel within the context of American interests.
Responding to a question at one of the meetings about the possibility of “Reagan selling Israel down the river,” Dayan said: “Israel knows how to swim, having learned in 1948, and we have been swimming by ourselves ever since.” At several press conferences he also called strongly for a U.S. government military-political “red line” in the Mideast, beyond which it would not allow its interests in the area to be jeopardized.
Dayan’s first visit on arrival earlier this month was to the hospital bedside of his long-time friend Irving Bernstein, UJA executive vice chairman, who has since been recovering at home from a mild heart attack and is expected to resume his duties soon after Thanksgiving.
