Gen. Charles de Gaulle, leader of the right-wing Rally of the French People party, today declared that both the Arabs and the Jews are “exaggerating” their positions on Palestine, but that there is a possibility for settlement of the problem along the lines of an American proposal.
Replying to a question, at his first press conference since the victory of the RPF in the October municipal elections, de Gaulle said: “Both sides are exaggerating. A modus vivendi resulting from the American proposal seems reasonable. It would allow Jews and Arabs to live peacefully side by side. Disputes between the Jews and the Arabs must not be allowed to set the world on fire and all nations must envisage taking measures to prevent this.”
