Death Toll Mounts in Germany

wounded and little hope was held out for his recovery. Two others received comparatively minor wounds.

The same S. S. gang broke into another house and arrested all the members of the family who had been playing cards, on the grounds that they were holding an illegal secret meeting.

There was a class between the local police and the gang of S. S. men when the police made a belated appearance and tried to arrest the raiders.

In the Tempelhof area of Berlin, non-uniformed storm troopers raided a social gathering of Jewish war veterans and started a violent quarrel. The raiders, armed with knives and daggers, wounded many of the war veterans and their friends. A few moments after the affray the president of the local chapter of the Jewish war veterans, Herr Sterenberg, dropped dead of a heart attack as a result of the excitement as he entered the subway to go home.

DOCTOR BELIEVED KILLED

In Glogau, Silesia, Dr. Linderman, well known figure in the local Jewish community, was arrested while plying tennis in his garden and was taken away by storm troopers. It is assumed he is dead. The only information available regarding his fate is that when Frau Linderman asked storm troop officials at their headquarters whether she might bring her husband a coat since he had been taken away without one. She was told: "Nothing is needed, we have fixed him up."

In Dresden Dr. Melzer, the Jewish attorney who refused to give the Hitler salute in a courtroom where he was to try a case, is now facing trial because of his refusal. The president of the bar association of Saxony decided to submit the Melzer case to the superior county court and seeks to prohibit Melzer from further practice of his profession.

In one of the Wuerttemberg districts, where Jews for a long time has been prohibited from appearing on the streets after nine o’clock in the evening, they were ordered to remain off the streets for three full days during the S. S. invasion of the district.

STATE SEEKS ORDER

So far as is known the state authorities are doing everything in their power to restore order, especially in Silesia, former domain of the slain Edmund Heines, where the executive power which had been transferred from the police to the S. S. during the bloody weekend which marked Chancellor Hitler’s attack on his erstwhile lieutenants, has now reverted to the police.

The Silesian Nazi papers have strenuously denounced the occurrences of the week at Hirschberg, where at least six Jews are known to have been killed, since the attack is expected to react disastrously on Hirschberg’s summer resort business.

Franconia, seat of the most violent anti-Semitic disturbances since Hitler came to power, chiefly because it is the center of activities for Julius Streicher, notorious anti-Semite who organized the anti-Jewish boycott and has repeatedly incited anti-Jewish attacks through Der Stuermer, anti-Semitic weekly, has been quiet as a result of the eradication of the most violent elements among the storm ptroops.

STREICHER COOLS DOWN

Jews in Nuremberg have noticed, with hope, that Streicher now walks the streets of the city without carrying the heavy whip in his hand which had been almost his badge of office.

Der Angriff, newspaper owned by Propaganda Minister Goebbels has renewed its anti-Jewish drive with a violent attack against the American film, "Roman Scandals," starring the American-Jewish comedian, Eddie Cantor. The film, asserts Der Angriff. "illustrates the Jewish sadism which prevails in American films."

The Voelkischer Beobachter, in a long article, demonstrates how "Jewish influence" has brought about the demoralization of Poland. The paper, owned by Hitler himself, repudiates pogroms as being the "product of some nations" temperament which demands blood for expression. But the reaction of our German peoples," it states, "is simply for the separation and expulsion of the Jews from the most important functions."

From this it is inferred a new pogrom method has been devised for Germany, without bloodshed, without clamor, but terribly effective—much more so than ordinary pogroms.

BOYCOTT IS DISGUISED

The boycott of Jewish business men and professionals is continuing unabatedly, although it is disguised in many of its manifestations. A curious manifestation of this was the publication today in the Deutscher Mittelstand, official organ of the organization of artisans and professional men of the Rhine-Main district, of a list of all Jewish firms, lawyers and doctors still remaining in Frankfurt. The list is published without comment. The organization sponsoring the publication is recognized by the government.

Developments adversely affecting the Jewish economic position were feared today in the summary dismissal of Philip Kessler, who was considered friendly to the Jews, as director of German industry. Herr Kessler, who had urged economic equality for the Jews, was replaced by the outspoken anti-Semite, Graf von der Goltz.
