The Interim Committee of the American Jewish Conference will, at its next meeting, consider a resolution revoking the committee’s previous decision to discontinue Conference operations at the end of this year, it was announced here today.
The resolution, to be proposed by Samuel Rothstein, president of the United Synagogue of America, will seek Interim Committee authorization to carry forward the Conference program beyond December 31, 1948, the date previously fixed for dissolution, and “until the tasks for which the organization was called into being are completed.”
Action on a similar proposal made by Rothstein at the last meeting of the Interim Committee, on Sept. 23, was deferred to give adequate notice to all 64 members of the Committee, governing body of the Conference between sessions, and to enable them to participate in the deliberations. The next meeting of the Interim Committee was set for Nov. 10.
Advocates of continuation of the Conference in its present form beyond the dissolution date, agreed upon at the Dec., 1947, meeting of the Interim Committee, base their position on resolutions adopted by affiliated national organizations and community councils throughout the country, urging extension of the life of the Conference. They also maintain that the situation obtaining on March 10, 1948, when the Interim Committee unanimously decided that it was imperative to continue the activities of the Conference, still prevails.
