Argentine Foreign Minister Dr. Carlo Florit, United States Ambassador Willard Beaulac, and Israel Ambassador Arieh Kubovy were the principal speakers here last night at a dinner tendered in honor of the delegation of the American Jewish Committee now in this country to establish closer contact with Argentine Jewry.
The dinner, attended by many prominent Jewish leaders, was arranged by the Argentine Jewish Institute–an organization similar to the American Jewish Committee–and presided over by Simon Mirelman, president of the Institute and one of the most leading figures in Argentine Jewish life. Minister of Interior Dr. Alfredo Vitolo sent a message of greetings. The AJC delegation was received yesterday by President Arturo Frondizi of Argentina.
Irving Engel, president of the American Jewish Committee, who heads the delegation, expressed gratification that “there is complete agreement” between his organization in the United States and the Jewish Community in Argentina regarding Jewish objectives. These objectives, he said, are to promote Jewish rights everywhere, advance the cause of human rights all over the world, and strengthen the State of Israel.
Jacob Blaustein, honorary president of the AJC, said the time is ripe for greater cooperation in Jewish endeavors between the Southern and Northern halves of the American Hemisphere. “The warmth of your reception and the frankness with which we have been able to discuss mutual problems, leave no doubt that the contact now established will lead to collaboration between us as equal partners in the solution of our own problems, in bringing relief to our brethren in distress, and in support for Israel,” Mr. Blaustein said.
Emphasizing the “important contributions” made by the American Jewish Committee for the creation and the development of Israel, Mr. Blaustein declared that the AJC sees in Israel “an Island fortress for democracy, social progress and political stability in an area which is neither democratic nor progressive nor stable.” He said that “Jews everywhere owe a great debt to Israel, because the men and women of that tiny beleaguered land have–through their bravery, devotion and sacrifice–created in the eyes of the world a new image of the Jews.”
