Middle East planks in the Democratic platform which will be presented to the full platform committee today reportedly called for the opening of the Suez Canal to all nations as well as for direct negotiations between Israel and the Arab states for peaceful settlement of their dispute.
The planks also called for resettlement of the Arab refugees in countries other than Israel which can integrate them into their economies and expressed opposition to the Arab boycott against Israel. While most of these provisions were also included in the 1956 Democratic platform, the 1960 Mideast planks stressed freedom of navigation through the Suez Canal.
