Emil Glueckstadt, director of the famous Landsmanns Bank of Copenhagen, was found dead in his cell in the Copenhagen prison Sunday.
Herr Glueckstadt was being held in connection with the sensational trial against the managers of the bank whose crash percipitated a cabinet crisis recently. In consequence of Glueckstadt’s death the reason for which is said to be “unknown”, the trial has been interrupted.
The banker’s tragic death is as remarkable as the bankruptcy of the Gibraltar-like institution over which he presided as director. He was a Jew and was considered one of the richest men in Europe, the friend of rulers and statesmen.
He participated in many diplomatic missions in behalf of Denmark and was the leading economic expert of the Dannish delegation to the Genoa Conference.
