There is no truth in the story which was circulated very largely in the press in Johannesburg and abroad, that an attempt had been made in Cape Town to burn a Jewish boy at the stake.
After an extensive investigation conducted by the Jewish Telegraphic Agency representative here, inquiries being made of the Chief of Police, the fire brigade authorities, the newspapers, and thousands of children in the vicinity, the story is found to have originated in a newspaper report based on hearsay appearing in the “Argus,” which did not mention the word “Jewish.” No attempt was made to burn any child in Cape Town. The Jews of Cape Town are horrified by the suggestion and strongly condemn the individual who invented this tale of anti-Semitism existing between Jew and Gentile in Cape Town.
