The Communist Party political purge in Czechoslovakia has been accompanied by growing unofficial pressure upon Jews with Zionist connections, the New York Times reported here today. Citing information received in New York, the Times said that Jews have been urged to give up plans for migrating to Israel.
The report quoted by the Times said that among hundreds of persons in Bratislava ordered to leave the city within ten days on “security grounds,” Jews predominate. It also stated that Dr. Sigmund Stein, one of the founders of the Czechoslovak Communist Party and for several years legal advisor of the Czechoslovak Government and a friend of Rudolph Slansky, arrested former Deputy Premier, has been arrested in Prague. His arrest was believed by diplomats in Prague to be part of a purge of Jews in important positions, the report emphasized.
