Digest of Public Opinion on Jewish Matters

An appeal to President Coolidge to intercede officially with the Roumanian government against the unabating anti-Jewish acts in that country, is made in an editorial appearing simultaneously in the “California Jewish Review” and the “Buffalo Jewish Review” in their issues of May 13. The editorial declares:

“Since the decision of the Law Court at Kimpolung in acquitting the murderer of the Jewish student, Falik, the anti-Semitic press of Roumania has been brazen in its ‘demand for Jewish blood’.

“The anti-Semitic agitation had been gathering force all through the last five years; and it reached its dominant position in Roumanian middle-class society long before the Kimpolung affair. It has been claiming the right, or urging the necessity to ‘kill’ even before Falik’s murder. Extermination, as the solution of Jewish problems in Roumania was put forward as a serious proposition in Cuzist text-books of ‘political economy’. The glorification of murder plays a big part in the articles appearing in the anti-Semitic papers.

“We appeal to you. Mr. Calvin Coolidge, to demand an explanation from official Roumania. It seems to us, that from a standpoint of decency, from a standpoint of Americanism, from a Christian and humanitarian standpoint there is more justification for cutting off diplomatic relations with Roumania for their outrages against its Jews, than keeping strained relations with a country for merely refusing to pay a few paltry dollars.”

TRIBUTE TO BEN SELLING

The seventy-fifth birthday of Ben Selling, noted Jewish philanthropist of Portland, Oregon, which took place a few days ago, is commented on by the Portland “Oregonian” Writing editorially the paper says, among other things:

“Mr. Selling’s interest in well doing is locally proverbial. His benefactions have been many, spontaneous and ungrudged. He is possessed of the respect and affection of thousands of his fellow townsmen. For the breadth of his humanity, for his concern lest others suffer, for the sincere, forth-right and yet modest manifestations of his very human friendship.”

Among the largest contributors to the building fund drives being conducted separately by the Presbyterian Hospital of Newark, N. J., and the Orange Memorial Hospital of Orange. N. J., are Louis Bamberger and Felix Fuld.

To the $850,000 building fund drive of the Presbyterian Hospital. Mr. Fuld subscribed $25,000 and Mr. Bamberger, $15,000. To the $2,000,000 building fund drive of the Orange Memorial Hospital. Mr. Bamberger subscribed $25,000 and Mr. and Mrs. Fuld, a like amount.
