A description of Henri Torres, the noted Paris lawyer who has undertaken the defense of Sholom Schwartzbard, is given by the Paris correspondent of the “Day,” N. Franck, who, writing in that paper of June 16, observes among other things:
“Torres is a Jew from Algeria. Politically he belongs to the left-Socialist party. He is a mixture of the Orient and European culture-a Semite and a European in one. The several great trials which he conducted recently have put him in the very front rank of great lawyers. Those who saw him at the trial of the anarchists will not forget him so soon.
“A speech by Torres is like a poetic creation. His chief weapon is temperament. He is also a keen psychologist, and he feels himself at home among the twists and intricacies of law.
“Torres’ greatness,” we are told further, “consists in his ability to relate his client to the cycle of all mankind and to prove that the action of the accused was a result of the socialeconomic conditions or the moral environment. He always blames society and absolves the individual or extenuates his guilt.”
POLISH ANTI-SEMITIC ORGAN BLAMES PILSUDSKI COUP ON JEWS AND “MANCHESTER GUARDIAN”
The charge that the Jews, the Masons and the “Manchester Guardian” are responsible, among others, for the recent Pilsudski coup and the new regime in Poland, is made by the “Dwa Grosze,” the Polish anti-Semitic organ of Warsaw.
Asking who is pleased with the Pilsudski coup, the paper answers: “the ‘Manchester Guardian.’ the ‘Masonic-Jewish’ organ, which, since Poland has again become independent, has been at the head of the anti-Polish press abroad and has been describing Poland as a land of pogroms, of persecution and oppression of the national minorities. The Germans are satisfied, and the Communists rejoice. In short, all our enemies, the Jews, the Masons, the Germans, the Communists, are now hoping for Poland’s ruin.”
Seventy-nine years after its inception, Congregation Adath Israel of Cincinnati. Ohio, will place the corner stone of its new Synagogue next Sunday. The new synagogue. when complete, will cost $400,000.
At the cornerstone exercises Mayor Season-good will deliver an address. The principal address will be by Dr. C. H. Kauvar, of Denver, Colorado.
