Abe Feinberg, general director of Supersol, a chain of supermarkets in Israel owned largely by Canadian investors, was arrested here last night in connection with suspected arson. He was remanded today for a hearing before a magistrate in Tel Aviv tomorrow.
The warehouse, store and offices of Supersol in this city were gutted by a fierce fire 10 days ago. At that time, police and fire department officials said that virtually all Supersol records had been destroyed in the conflagration. Police said today that arson was suspected immediately, since the fire had started simultaneously in two separate locations on the Supersol property.
It was disclosed today that the Canadian board of directors of Supersol suspended Feinberg from his post several weeks ago, alleging that there were discrepancies in the firm’s Israel records. Feinberg, who is 33, was born in the United States, and settled in Israel shortly after the end of World War II. He is a graduate of the Hebrew Union College in Cincinnati. He had been awarded a Fulbright Fellowship, and had participated in a number of archeological projects in Israel since he came here. Feinberg was under police interrogation all day today and, according to police, refused to take a lie detector test.
