Twenty-seven displaced Jews from Austria have identified 40 former S.S. officers and guards at the Mauthausen and Ebensee concentration camps, it was reported here today. The guards are awaiting trial at the Dachau camp.
The Jews were brought to Germany by an American war crimes officer after they had tentatively identified the Nazis from photographs. The officer brought hundreds of photographs of suspected war criminals to Austria in an attempt to gather evidence against them.
Among the photographs was one of Hans Euler, a former conmandant of Ebensee, who was identified by some of the Jews. Euler had dispatched hundreds of Jews to German minefields where they were killed, just prior to the capture of the camp by advancing American troops.
