New Year’s services for the displaced Jews in Germany will be held at 300 places of worship set up by the Joint Distribution Committee, it was announced here today. The agency has also distributed 150,000 religious articles as well as 1,000,000 items of apparel on the occasion of the New Year.

The remaining displaced Jews in Germany will observe their fourth Rosh Hashanah in this country. The New Year 5709 will be celebrated amidst an accelerated mass emigration program to Israel. Present plans call for the departure of 20 flights to Israel during October with a total of 900 DP’s. In addition, 10,000 Israel-bound immigrants will leave Germany, Austria and Italy during the coming month by rail. All transportation costs are met by the J.D.C. and initial estimates place the monthly bill at $1,500,000.

Dr. William Haber, advisor on Jewish affairs to the U.S. Command in Germany, predicted today that the core of the DP problem will be solved by the middle of next summer. As a result of the speeded-up immigration to Israel, Dr. Haber reported that there is a spirit of unprecedented optimism in the DP camps as the refugees prepare to depart for the Jewish state.

The office of the chief rabbi of the U.S. zone in Germany revealed today that in view of the accelerated emigration program, displaced Jews who are en route to Israel will be permitted to travel during the High Holidays.
