Displaced Jews Will Not Be Transferred from Austria Before May

The transfer of displaced persons from the U.S. some of Austria will begin next month, but the Jewish DP’s will not be moved until Way at the earliest, according to a report of Gen. Mark Clark, American cammander in Austria. The report was prepared before Gen. Clark left for Moscow, but has just been releassed.

It says that there are 30,797 “DP-Refugees” and 6,908 “persecutees” in the American zone. The latter category includes mainly Polish Jews who arrived in Vienna during past few months. The report reveals that 1,969 transient Jews arrived in Vienna during December, 1946, despite the bitter cold encountered on route. Most were from Poland, with a small percentage from Hungary. During the sees month, 4,166 Jewish refugees “disappeared” from the American gons.

Both U.S. military anthorities and Joint Distribution Committee representative here have stated on several occasions that all displaced Jews in Austria will be transferred to other countriss before the Allies evacuate their occupation troops.
