A crisis that might have affected shipment of meats to Israel was averted today with the signing of an agreement between the Chief Rabbinate of Israel, the Consistoire of France, and the Orthodox non-Consistorial rabbis of France. As a result of the agreement, a first cargo of 750 tons of meat will be shipped shortly from France to Israel, in time for the Israeli market pre-High Holiday trade.
Under the agreement, negotiated with the aid of the Israeli embassy here, control of kosher slaughter rests in the hands of the Consistoire. The latter, in turn, will turn control over supervision of slaughter, to conform with Jewish dietary laws, to a committee composed of both the Consistoire and the Orthodox non-Consistorial rabbis.
