Arriving late at the building housing the consulate on Michigan avenue, Dr. Zeisler was not aware that the rest of the committee had been refused ingress to the consul’s office and had departed peacefully. He said that he began a search for the committee in the corridors.
Suddenly, according to Dr. Zeisler’s statement, a burly individual accosted him and asked if he were seeking the committee. Dr. Zeisler answered in the affirmative and asked if the questioner were also going to be present.
“NEED MEN LIKE HITLER”
Thereupon, according to the physician, the husky person, later discovered to be Harry Scholz, a Chicago detective, pulled out a short club and set about beating him up, the while saying, “We need men like Hitler in America who’ll do to the Jews what he did to them in Germany.”
Disheveled and bruised, the doctor said he was dragged from the building and thrown in a squad car full of police which was waiting at the curb. At the Chicago avenue police station, he was taken into the basement and subjected to brutal treatment.
After several hours, during which he had not been booked by the desk sergeant, he was permitted to phone his office and finally released on bail, booked on a charge of disorderly conduct.
The case will come before Judge Helander this Wednesday.
