A leading Rome daily newspaper published today copies of documents which contradicted a denial by an Italian Government official that the Mussolini Fascist Government and secret police ever had negotiations with Nazi SS Colonel Adolf Eichmann on the capture and deportation of Italian Jews. The denial was made last December 8 by Oscar Scalfaro, Under Secretary of the Interior.
The documents published by Paese Sera included several letters from Italian police officials to German commanders which contained lists of Jews rounded up for deportation by Fascists “following instructions by Sicherheits Polizei Kommandos” and orders by Nazi authorities to Italian police ordering the Jewish deportations.
The newspaper declared that the Italian police organizations during the period of the Axis cooperation between Nazi Germany and Mussolini’s Italy were completely at the disposal of the Germans. The Pease Sera sharply criticized Mr. Scalfar for denying there had been contacts between the Italians and Eichmann’s representatives.
