William E. Dodd, after serving four-and-a-half years as Ambassador to Germany, returned last night and told how he had tried vainly to bring the ideals of democratic civilization to a country where Jews are dismissed, expelled and imprisoned and religious freedom denied.
Dr. Dodd decried race hatred, war preparations and treaty violations. Defending the Jews, he said they served courageously on both sides in the war, and after the war aided the helpless Germans. In the region where religious freedom is denied and racial hatred cultivated, he defined the duty of American representatives as reminding men of “the significance of democratic civilization.” He intimated that conditions for the Jews in Germany would grow worse.
