The continued devaluation of the American dollar has resulted in Palestine supplanting the United States as the chief source of Passover food for the needy Jews of Poland, it was disclosed here today after a survey by Jewish relief organizations.
The survey shows that remittances from Palestine have risen considerably this year, representing to many Jewish families here the only means of providing themselves with food for Passover.
FLOODED WITH REQUESTS
The Jewish relief organizations in Poland are perplexed at the flood of applications received from thousands of needy Jewish families asking for Passover food. It was estimated here today that half of the entire Jewish population of Poland requires relief for Passover, which the Jewish communities and relief organizations are not in a position to provide.
With Passover approaching, Jewish leaders in Poland are at a loss to predict what hundreds of thousands of Jews will do when, despite all efforts, it is found impossible to provide them even with Matzoh. It is believed that many Jews will be compelled to eat bread this Passover because they are not in a position to buy Matzoh.
