The ruling last year by Secretary of the Treasury Mellon permitting the import of foreign wine for sacramental purposes is being contested by domestic wine producers. The attorney general is understood to be taking the case under review.
The domestic producers contend that the domestic supply of wine is sufficient to meet all needs. The Union of Orthodox Rabbis which last year obtained the favorable ruling of Secretary Mellon claim that most of the domestic wine is not fit for Jewish purposes.
It is pointed out that the stoppage of import of foreign wines will deal a severe blow to the Jewish grape growers and wine makers of Palestine.
