The situation of the displaced Jews of Europe is critical as they face another winter on the continent, George Backer, president of the World ORT Union, declared at a press conference today. He added that the only hope for the Jews, who cannot return to their homes, lies with the United Nations inquiry committee on Palestine.
Even the assistance offered by the International Refugee Organization is insufficient, he said, and the solution of their problems lies in resettlement. He reported that the ORT will spend more than $2,000,000 this year in retraining Jews for occupations in new homes. He stated that the ORT would train some 20,000 Jews in Germany, Austria and Italy and another 12,500 in eastern and western Europe.
