Although most of the Jewish displaced persons in the camps throughout Germany realize that it will be many months before they can expect to immigrate to Palestine, the decision to establish a Jewish State was greeted with unqualified enthusiasm here. Many DP’s told a Jewish Telegraphic Agency correspondent that “now at least we know we are going to Palestine sooner or later.”
Today and tomorrow have been proclaimed holidays by the Central Committee of Liberated Jews in the U.S. zone and many mass meetings and parades were held this afternoon and tonight, following yesterday’s spontaneous celebrations. Some groups, especially those near the Czechoslovak border, did not get the news until late yesterday, out as soon as they did improvised parties were staged.
The Central Committee today addressed an open letter to the displaced Jews, nothing the joy which swept every camp and installation, and pointing out that their days in the camps are now numbered. The Committee also sent greetings to the Palestine Jewish community and called on Jews throughout the world “to build and, if necessary, fight for the fortress of national freedom and social justice.”
