Dr. Cyrus Adler, president of the American Jewish Committee, explained today that his letter to the Polish Embassy protesting against the Polish shechita bill, the answer to which was reported in today’s despatches, was written before the bill had been amended to permit sufficient kosher slaughtering for religious needs.
In his letter, written March 9, Dr. Adler declared that the result of adoption of the original bill “would be to prevent Jews who adhere to their religious doctrines from eating meat altogether on the pain of violating conscientious belief.”
