Dr. Angelo Goldstein, a pre-war deputy in the Czechoslovakian Parliament, died here last night after a brief illness. He was 57.
Dr. Goldstein, prior to emigrating to Palestine in March, 1939, six months after Munich, was one of the principal leaders of the Czech Jewish community and represented the Jewish Party in the National Assembly, the Czechoslovak Parliament. He sponsored much legislation dealing with Jewish issues and fought the pro-Nazi members of the Assembly. In Dec., 1933, he engaged in a fist fight on the floor of the Assembly with a German nationalist member who had called for a struggle against the Jews and “the Jewish spirit.”
Dr. Goldstein returned to Czechoslovakia for a brief visit last October, during which he saw President Eduard Benes and secured from him a statement that he still favored the establishment of a Jewish state in Palestine.
