Dr. Emanuel de Marnay Baruch, prominent German-American physician, honorary president of the Deutsche Gesellig-Wissenschaftliche Verein, has resigned as a member of the German Day Committee, the Jewish Telegraphic Agency reports. German Day will be celebrated October 29 in the 165th Regiment Armory, the Swastika flag will be flown and Ambassador Hans Luther and Count von Luckner will speak. Pro-Nazi elements are apparently in control of the United German Societies, under whose auspices the celebration is being held.
Dr. Baruch is well known in German-American circles. He is the former president of the Wissenschaftliche Verein and the president of the Goethe Association of the United States. When the Goethe anniversary celebration was held in Carnegie Hall, Dr. Baruch delivered the main address in English.
When the Wissenschaftliche Verein withdrew from the United German Societies in order to disassociate itself from Nazi propaganda, Dr. Baruch called attention to the sixty years of activity of the society on behalf of German culture in the United States since it was founded by Carl Schurz. He urged the society to devote itself solely to cherishing German art, culture and science.
