The City of New York honored Dr. Samuel Belkin on his 30th anniversary as president of Yeshiva University at a reception held yesterday in Gracie Mansion. The reception, hosted by Mayor and Mrs. John V. Lindsay, drew some 200 leading educators, community leaders, political figures and philanthropists.
The Mayor presented the 62-year-old Dr. Belkin with the New York City 75th Anniversary Medal and with the New York City Scroll of Distinguished Service. The Scroll, in part, cited Dr. Belkin as “author, scholar, educator and spiritual architect…who with inspiration and nobility epitomized the Jewish heritage on the soil of American democracy.” The reception marked the launching of a series of events to be climaxed by a national dinner in Dr. Belkin’s honor Dec. 9 at the Americana Hotel.
Foreign Minister Abba Eban said today that in anticipation of his meeting with Secretary of State Henry A. Kissinger he intended “to study how Dr. Kissinger views prospects for his good offices to be operative in the Middle East conflict as they were successful in other conflicts.” Eban made his remarks at Lod Airport before taking off for London where he and Mrs. Eban will spend the High Holy Days with relatives. The Foreign Minister will go to New York for the UN General Assembly sessions directly after the holiday.
