A chair in experimental medicine in the name of the late Dr. Joseph I. Bluestone has been established at the Hebrew University-Hadassah Medical School in Jerusalem, it was announced here today by the American Friends of the Hebrew University.
Dr. E. Michael Bluestone, a New York physician and a son of the late Joseph Bluestone, disclosed that a donation of $108,000 for the chair was earmarked from the estate of his younger brother. Dr. Moses A. Bluestone. The new chair will be held by Dr. Jack Gross, an American, who is Professor of Experimental Medicine and Cancer Research at the Hebrew University.
The gift to the Jerusalem university represents the devotion to the cause of Zionism and Israel by two generations and three members of the Bluestone family, all physicians. Dr. Joseph Bluestone, who died in New York on November 2, 1934, aged 84, was a native of Lithuania and a medical graduate of New York University, who practiced medicine on New York’s lower East side for 40 years. He was an active Zionist and a communal leader who organized the first Chovevei Zion Society in the U.S. in 1882.
