Praised for Securing Credit for Palestine
Dr. Georg Halpering, managing director of the Jewish Colonial Trust, returned to Europe on Saturday.
Prior to Dr. Halperin’s departure, a luncheon was given in his honor, at which Louis Lipsky, president of the Zionist Organization of America, presided.
A number of prominent Zionist attended the luncheon. Mr. Lipsky, as well as the other speakers, paid tribute to Dr. Halperin for having succeeded in obtaining credits in this country for financial institutions in Palestine and especially for his cooperation for the reorganization of the Zion Common-wealth and Palestine Securities, Inc.
AMERICAN JEWISH CONGRESS EXECUTIVE WILL MEET FEB. 6
The Executive Committee of the American Jewish Congress will hold its next meeting on Sunday, February 6th, at the Hotel Astor. There will be two sessions, one at 2:30 in the afternoon and the other at night.
This meeting will receive a report of the recent activities of the Congress and will consider ands pass upon the program of the next Congress session which will be held in Washington, D. C., beginning February 20th.
William Green, President of the American Federation of Labor, in an address at the United Mine Workers’ convention in Indianapolis, declared that the federation would no longer be content merely to defend itself from the attacks of Communists, but would “reverse the order and carry the battle to them until they are beaten to their knees.”
Mr. Green advocated the five-day week in all industries.
Twenty-four garment workers, members of unions in the garment trade, were arraigned in General Sessions Court in New York City on Friday for sentence for acts of violence committed during the strike. Judge Otto rosaisky sentenced fourteen to various terms of imprisonment, suspended sentence on three, and postponed sentenced on seven.
A granite shaft erected at the grave of the late Dr. Kohler, Hebrew scholar, by the congregation of Temple Beth-El in the Beth-El Cemeteries, Brooklyn, N. Y., was dedicated yesterday. Dr. Kohler was rabbi of the temple from 1879 to 1903. The dedication address was delivered by Dr. Samuel Schulman, rabbi of the temple.
