More than 200 scholars and clergymen from all over the United States tonight paid tribute to Dr. Nelson Glueck, biblical archaeologist and president of the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, in honor of his sixtieth birthday.
Dr. Glueck was commended both for his work as a scientist, during which he established a world-wide reputation as a result of discoveries he made in seven years of archaeological exploration in Israel’s Negev desert; and as a leader in Jewish higher education. Under his leadership, it was pointed out, the HUC-JIR has expanded to a complex of institutions, including four colleges, for the training of rabbis, cantors and educators. Former U.S. Navy Chaplain Joshua L. Goldberg presided at the dinner.
