Dr. Jorge Garcia-Granados, former Guatemalan Ambassador to the United States and until recently the head of his country’s delegation to the United Nations, arrived at New York International Airport from Israel yesterday to confer with leaders of the United Jewish Appeal on measures to be taken by the U.J.A. in meeting the severe economic crisis in the Jewish State.
Dr. Granados, who visited Israel at the invitation of the Israel Government, will undertake a tour of a select group of major American cities to confer in each with Jewish community leaders and to help spur a special drive launched earlier this week to raise $50,000,000 in cash by June 30 as a first installment by American Jews on the Appeal’s 1952 goal of $151,500,000.
Speaking to representatives of the press, Dr. Granados said: “Israel has made progress that I would never have conceived could have been accomplished in so short a time. Where there were villages there are now cities. Small cities have become large cities. The whole landscape of the country has changed.”
