Dr. Israel Goldstein Honored by Jewish Theological Seminary

Dr. Israel Goldstein was honored yesterday by the Jewish Theological Seminary of America on the 50th anniversary of his admission there as a rabbinical student.

Members of the faculty and student body, civic leaders and rabbinical colleagues joined in the ceremony at which the one-time student, who became one of America’s outstanding rabbinical and Zionist leaders, presented his alma mater with two portraits, one of Michael Gratz, founder of the Gratz family, and of his daughter, Rebecca, said to have been the model for the heroine of Sir Walter Scottie Ivanhoe.

After graduation. Dr. Goldstein became rabbi of B’rai Jeshurun Synagogue, second oldest Jewish congregation in New York City which he served for 42 years. Currently world chairman of the Keren Hayesod, he has been president of the Zionist Organization of America, Jewish National Fund of America, American Jewish Congress and many others.
