Dr. James Bernstein, member of the board of directors of the United Hias Service and former European director of the Hias, died here today at the age of 84.
Born in Russia, he came to the United States in 1891 and studied medicine here. He served in the medical corps of the U.S. Army during World War II. In 1925 he became the director of the Hias operations in Europe and held this post for more than 20 years, aiding in the emigration and rescue of tens of thousands of Jews from Nazi Germany and other lands occupied by the Nazi army.
