DR. BERNHARD KAHN, EUROPEAN DIRECTOR OF THE AMERICAN JEWISH JOINT DISTRIBUTION COMMITTEE, WHO HAS JUST RETURNED FROM A TOUR OF AUSTRIA, CZECHOSLOVAKIA AND SURROUNDING COUNTRIES, OUTLINED TODAY A PROGRAM OF FUTURE J.D.C. WORK.
IN THE DISCUSSIONS HE HELD, SPECIAL ATTENTION WAS PAID TO THE TRAINING OF YOUTH, AND STEPS HAVE ALREADY BEEN TAKEN FOR ESTABLISHMENT OF NEW APPRENTICE HOMES AND EXTENSION OF THE OLD, AND CREATION OF EDUCATION AND PATRON COMMITTEES TO SUPERVISE INSTRUCTION OF APPRENTICES.
THE NECESSARY FUNDS FOR THIS WORK HAVE ALREADY BEEN PROVIDED IN CENTRAL AND EASTERN EUROPEAN COUNTRIES, INCLUDING RUMANIA, DR. KAHN SAID. HE EMPHASIZED THE NEED FOR FREE LOAN SOCIETIES AND PROMISED THE SUPPORT OF THE J.D.C. TO THESE SOCIETIES. DR. KAHN AUTHORIZED LIMITED ONE-TIME SUBVENTIONS TO EXISTING INSTITUTIONS SUCH AS HOSPITALS AND ORPHANAGES, BUT INSISTED ON PROPORTIONATE LOCAL EFFORTS.
IN CZECHOSLOVAKIA HE SOUGHT TO EXTEND J.D.C. WORK IN SUB-CARPATHIA, WHERE THE JEWISH POPULATION OF 100,000 IS VERY POOR AND WHERE THE J.D.C. HAS BEEN ACTIVE SINCE AFTER THE WAR. HE SUCCEEDED IN INTERESTING JEWISH LEADERS IN PRAHA, WITH THE RESULT THAT A LARGE COMMITTEE FOR JEWISH WORK IN SUB-CARPATHIA IS IN THE PROCESS OF ORGANIZATION. THE ORPHANAGE AT MUKACEVO WILL BE CHARGED WITH THE HELP OF THE NEW COMMITTEE. A SCHOOL OF DOMESTIC SCIENCE AND A CARPENTRY SHOP WILL BE EQUIPPED, FOR WHICH $7,500 HAS BEEN GRANTED. IT IS INTENDED TO CONVERT CREDIT COOPERATIVES IN THE REGION INTO FREE LOAN SOCIETIES.
DR. KAHN ALSO STUDIED THE SITUATION OF THE REFUGEES, WHO ARE CONCENTRATED BY THE CZECHOSLOVAKIAN GOVERNMENT NOW INTO CERTAIN DISTRICTS, AND HE DISCUSSED AT LENGTH THE MEANS OF POSSIBLE RELIEF.
