Dr. Mordecai M. Kaplan, speaking yesterday at the opening of classes for women in the extension department of the Jewish Theological Seminary of America, attacked Jewish teachers and communal leaders for activities “prompted by a desire to conserve and develop Jewish life but to render it as inconspicuous as possible in the eyes of the Gentiles and as harmless to themselves.” Five hundred persons attended the ceremonies.
Paying a tribute to the memory of the late Louis Marshall as one who “merited his title to Jewish leadership by virtue of his knowledge of Judaism,” Dr. Kaplan said:
“Unfortunately, his example in this respect is not even regarded as deserving emulation by those who head our institutions and dictate our communal policies.”
In the inauguration of the classes Dr. Kaplan predicted a development which will give adult Jewish education in the United States a new impetus.
