Dr. J. L. Magnes, head of the Hebrew University and leader of the newly-formed political party “Ichud” which advocates closer contact with the Arabs and the formation of a bi-national Arab-Jewish state in Palestine, today announced that he has come to the conclusion that no agreement with Arab leaders is possible.
“After my meeting this week with Auni Bey Abdul-Hadi, the noted leader of the Palestine Arabs, I see no possibility of an Arab-Jewish pact,” Dr. Magnes said, addressing a public meeting arranged by the Ichud Party. “My negotiations with Auni Bey Abdul-Hadi proved fruitless,” he added.
“The only way for a real agreement with the Arab people is direct contact between Jewish and Arab masses,” Dr. Magnes continued. “Jews must establish common Arab-Jewish clubs and must increase their cultural activities and social work among the Arabs.”
Participants at the meeting asked whether the Ichud Party accepts the British White Paper which imposes immigration and land restrictions upon Jews in Palestine. Dr. Magnes replied that he personally as well as all the other founders of the new party are strongly opposed to the White Paper.
