Dr. Emil Maurer, who survived several years in a Nazi concentration camp to return to Austria to lead the Austrian Jewish community, resigned today as president of the Jewish Community of Vienna because of ill health. He is 79. A successor will be elected on February 21.
Dr. Maurer emigrated to Britain and returned to Vienna after the Nazi regime collapsed. He was elected vice-president of the Jewish community of Vienna in 1948 and served in that post until 1952 when he was elected president, holding that position until his resignation.
He was honored for his many services to Austrian Jewry for whom he obtained improved restitution laws. He is known for his devotion to Israel which he visited several times.
