Dr. Meir Ebner, veteran Zionist leader and member of the first World Zionist Congress, died here today at the age of 82. He was Dr. Theodor Herzl’s secretary and was one of the outstanding leaders of Rumanian Jewry.
Born in Czernowitz, he was a member of the Rumanian Parliament in 1926-28, and later served in the Rumanian Senate for ten years. He was also president of the Jewish National Council of Rumania from 1918 to 1938. During the same 20 years, he was editor and publisher of the Ostjuedische Zeitung, a Jewish newspaper published in Czernowitz in the German language. He settled in Israel in 1940.
