Dr. E. Moses, prominent medical practitioner and member of the Bene Israelite community, has been elected mayor of Bombay by the Bombay Municipal Corporation.
His election marks the first time in history that a member of the Bene Israelite sect, legendary survivors of seven men and women who fled from Palestine in pre-Biblical times and were shipwrecked in India, has occupied the mayoralty. The sect numbers approximately 20,000 members in India of a total of 25,000 Indian Jews.
