Funeral services were held here today for Dr. Samuel Margoshes, Yiddish Journalist, lecturer and a Zionist leader who died here Friday at the age of 81. Dr. Margoshes served for many years as public relations director of the Jewish National Fund in America. A memorial service will be held at JNF New York headquarters tomorrow. Dr. Margoshes was born in Galicia, studied at Columbia University and received a doctorate in Hebrew letters from the Jewish Theological Seminary of America in 1916. He had been associated with the Day-Jewish Journal, one of New York’s Yiddish dallies, from 1923 until the time of his death as a columnist, editorial writer and editor-in-chief. He was a frequent contributor to Anglo-Jewish Yiddish and Hebrew periodicals here and abroad.
A member of the Zionist Actions Committee, Dr. Margoshes helped initiate the boycott against Nazi Germany when he was vice president of the American Jewish Congress from 1935 to 1939. He was widely known as a pioneer in the advancement of Jewish culture in this country and was associated with many literary, Zionist and political groups. He served as president of the World Congress for Jewish Culture and as vice president of the Jewish Writers Union.
