Unless the Soviet Government encourages the lifting of bane on Israel-bound Jewish emigration from the USSR and its satellites, the recent repudiation of its anti-Jewish policies will be regarded throughout the free world as only a half-measure, Dr. Joseph J. Schwartz, executive vice-chairman of the United Jewish Appeal, today told 750 delegates from Western Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Eastern Ohio at an emergency tri-state UJA regional conference.
“Israel has announced to the entire world its readiness to accept every man, woman and child permitted to leave the Soviet sphere, and the UJA is ready to finance a mass migration and help pay the resettlement costs inside the new state,” Dr. Schwartz said. His statement won the full approval of the delegates, who gave $750,000 for the UJA drive.
