“Romance of a People’, the history of the Jews up to the present time, was strikingly presented this evening in soldiers’ Field, before an enthusiastic audience of 150,000. Four months work had been required to weld into a smoothly working unit the 6,200 performers. From the opening scene, which was delayed until darkness fell, until the closing tribute to America, the pageant unfurled in a kaleidoscopic whirl of color and imagery, accentuated by the sonorous traditional Hebrew music. Among the noted singers who took part were Adolph Muhlmann, formerly of the Metropolitan, Isidore Mishkan, and Clara Platt.
Dr. Chaim Weizmann was guest of honor today at a luncheon given by Rufus Dawes, president of the Century of Progress Exposition, commemorating Jewish Day. Wr. Weizmann will be the guest of honor tonight at a spectacular pageant, “The Romance of a People.” which will be presented at Soldiers’ Field before an estimated capacity audience of 150,000 persons.
More that 50,000 Jewish visitors are reported to be in Chicago for Jewish Day today. Included among the visitors is a contingent of 300 persons from Toronto who arrived on a special train last night.
There will be a cast of 6,200 persons in the pageant, which begins with the story of creation and dramatically traces the course of history, ending with a tribute to American civilization. Following this story there will be shown episodes relating the history of the Jews.
Athletic drills and races were being held all day today at the Court of Honor in the fair grounds. Thousands of young Jewish men and women from all parts of the United States were competing in the athletic events.
