Dr. Stephen S. Wise, president of the Zionist Organization of America, warned tonight that “if the door of Palestine be shut, wholly or in part, if the minority rights of Jews are to be trampled upon, then Jews will have become a destructive force in the world, for Christendom will have committed the crime of moral self-destruction.”
In an address prepared for delivery at a dinner of the American Committee on Religious Rights and Minorities and the Church Peace Union at the Hotel Pennsylvania, Dr. Wise mentioned a similar warning by Dr. Chaim Weizmann, president of the Jewish Agency for Palestine, before the Royal Commission in Jerusalem a few days ago.
“The time has come for the public opinion of mankind, expressing itself either through the League of Nations at Geneva or through its great religious organizations, to speak earnestly and solemnly with respect to the lawless violation of the rights of many minority peoples in Europe and most especially of Jewish minorities,” he declared.
The dinner was in honor of the eightieth birthday of Dr. Arthur J. Brown, president of the committee. Other speakers were Michael Williams, editor of Commonweal; Dr. William P. Merrill, and Dr. Robert E. Speer.
