A campaign to enroll 10,000 new members in support of the Hebrew University in Jerusalem was announced last night by Dr. Norman Bentwich, professor of International Relations at the university and former Palestine Attorney-General.
Addressing British Lodge No. 1 of B’nai B’rith, international Jewish fraternal order, Dr. Bentwich said the development of the university had been hindered in the past few years by the lack of support.
Until a few years ago three-quarters of the university budget was made up by contributions from America, he said. While the contribution was £30,000 a year from America, England’s was only £2,000, Dr. Bentwich declared. The budget has been doubled and is now £80,000, he said.
Much of the credit for obtaining funds from the United States Dr. Bentwich gave to Dr. Judah L. Magnes, president of the university and former rabbi of Temple Emanu-El, New York, whom he described as “the man with the tongue of gold.”
The university is arranging to publish three times a year a bulletin describing its work and the aims of the institution, which he prophesied would become “a center of light and civilization to the whole world.”
