A national campaign for the advancement of religion and democracy was launched tonight by the Union of American Hebrew Congregations with a dinner in the Hotel Pierre sponsored by the Union’s New York Advisory Committee and attended by about 400 lay and rabbinical leaders.
Governor Lehman declared in a message to the dinner: “Recognition of the universal fatherhood of God and the brotherhood of man is the cornerstone on which religion and democracy alike are built. I am particularly glad, therefore, that the Union of American Hebrew Congregations, at its dinner this year, is stressing a revival of religion, both as an expression of faith and as a safeguard of democracy.”
Robert P. Goldman, president of the Union, declared in an address that “the synagogue speaks a language that America can understand–the language of religious freedom.” Other scheduled speakers were Mark Eisner, president of the American Association for Jewish Education; Rabbi Jonah B. Wise and Frederick F. Greenman, chairman of the New York Advisory Committee.
