Traffic accidents and casualties dropped sharply last week after a week of intensive anti-accident and road safety campaigns. Four persons were killed during the week and 253 were injured in 131 traffic accidents involving casualties. In the previous week, 34 persons were killed and 238 injured in two of the worst highway accidents in the history of Israel. Two weeks ago there were 19 deaths in highway accidents.
Civilian and military police have taken drastic measures to curb violations of traffic regulations. The military police have set up field courts along the main roads and intersections, trying traffic offenders on the spot. However, the head of the traffic department at the national police headquarters in Jerusalem, Shmuel Bogler, cautioned that the decrease in highway accidents and fatalities is no reason to be complacent. He said the war on traffic accidents will continue unabated.
