An attempt to discuss the present status of Israel’s borders at the parley of the Bagdad Pact countries which is taking place here was checked today by Secretary of State John Foster Dulles. The attempt was made by the representative of Iraq who raised the issue of the 1947 United Nations partition resolution. However, Mr. Dulles made it clear that the matter could be dealt with only by the United Nations.
Turkish public opinion, as expressed in newspapers representing a wide stratum of political thinking, is opposed to the Iraqi-Pakistani attempt to turn the Bagdad Pact into a weapon against Israel. Most newspapers voiced the fear that this would divert the attention of the pact nations from its main anti-Communist aim and might precipitate a war by attempting to change Israel’s borders.
