Dulles Discusses Israel’s Request for Arms with Eisenhower

Secretary of State John Foster Dulles was reported here today to have consulted with President Eisenhower on the list of American arms requested by the Israel Government of the United States. A State Department spokesman said today that Israel’s application for American arms is still under consideration. He added that he did not know whether the Defense Department’s decision on the application had already been received by Secretary Dulles who has the final word on it after consultation with President Eisenhower.

The Arab-Israel conflict occupied a good deal of attention today at a White House meeting which President Eisenhower and Secretary Dulles had with Congressional leaders of the Republican and Democratic parties, Questioned after the meeting, some of the leaders said that no specific proposals for future U.S. policy toward Israel were made. One source indicated, however, that Secretary Dulles stressed the importance of economic aid to counter Soviet penetration of the Middle East, citing specifically U.S. support of the Egyptian “high Aswan” dam project as a means of combatting Communist influence.

Awni Khalidi, secretary general of the Bagdad Pact and Iraqi representative to the United Nations, today discussed the Bagdad Pact with Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs George V. Allen.
